Data Collection Methods I chose the data below because I felt these were the best ways to see my students' growth over time. I wanted to see their reading level growth over the course of my study. I also wanted to see if my intervention strategies helped the students receive better grades on their comprehension quizzes. Since most of my data was showing a need for growth in the areas of comprehension, I chose to collect data based on first semester comprehension scores from theme tests, comprehension quizzes, and overall reading grades. My students were receiving less than 50% correct on their comprehension quizzes every other week. Eight out of my ten students missed all of the comprehension questions from the unit one theme test. Low scores on quizzes and unit tests lowered their overall reading grade to a D.
Each week, students read a LLI leveled book and answer questions about the story during scheduled reading intervention
Each week, students read a leveled book and answered comprehension questions while I completed the running record.
I recorded the students' Fountas and Pinnell reading levels from the beginning of research period to the end.
My students took a unit theme comprehension assessment after each basal unit; scores were collected.
My students completed a comprehension and vocabulary quiz over the basal story they read every other week.
Each week, my students read a leveled comprehension story and answer questions about the story during their guided reading rotation.
Each week, my students used a graphic organizer during their guided reading station to organize the story elements (characters, setting, problem/solution, events; beginning, middle, end; predicting, etc.).
Students were given a reading comprehension survey before the data collection and after.
Reading Level Data: Each week, students read a new story according to their reading level. Students all began at a level H. Each week I completed a running record for each student which rated their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension skills. I then moved students up or down a level according to their running record data.
Comprehension Quiz Data Students completed a comprehension quiz after each story in the third grade reading curriculum series. Each quiz had eight questions over the story.
Pre-Data Collection Comprehension Survey Results: My students were given a pre and post comprehension survey that asked the questions below.
Post-Data Collection Comprehension Survey Results: My students were given a pre and post comprehension survey that asked the questions below.
